Research Associate (Postdoctoral) - Position # 300753

Responsibilities: The position is supported by U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and requires active participation in research activities at the newly-established EPA Microarray Research Laboratory in Ft. Meade, MD.  Directions The successful candidate is expected to conduct research on the tools of functional genomics to understand the mechanisms involved in antimicrobial activity on pathogenic bacteria such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, and Mycobacterium bovis. The candidate will independently perform cell cultivation, gene cloning, nucleic acid isolation and labeling, real-time PCR, and microarray analysis. In addition, the candidate will also participate in development of a novel cell-based fluorescence assay to rapidly and cost-effectively determine antimicrobial efficacy. Publication of results in peer-reviewed journals, as well as research-related outreach and education activities, are highly expected.

 

Qualifications: Ph.D. in molecular and cell biology, microbiology, bioengineering, chemical engineering or related fields as well as extensive experience in bioengineering, molecular and cell biology, characterization of gene expression is required. Expertise in real-time PCR, Affymetrix GeneChips (DNA microarrays), and/or cell-based fluorescence assay is desirable, but not required. The candidate must have a solid publication record in peer-reviewed journals. All candidates must have proven competency in written and oral communications and be able to work in an energetic and interdisciplinary team environment.
